Daniel Ridgway Knight

Daniel Ridgway Knight (1839-1924) was an American painter known for his genre scenes and landscapes, particularly of the French countryside. He studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and later moved to Paris, where he studied under Jean-Léon Gérôme. Knight became interested in depicting the daily life of French peasants and their pastoral surroundings. His paintings often feature women engaged in rural tasks, such as picking flowers or tending to livestock, and he was known for his skill in depicting the effects of light on his subjects. Knight exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon and was awarded several medals throughout his career. He also gained popularity in the United States and became a member of the National Academy of Design. Today, his works can be found in museums throughout the world, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Musée d'Orsay.
