Collection: Ford Madox Brown

Ford Madox Brown (1821-1893) was a British painter who played a significant role in the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, a group of artists who sought to revive the sincerity and simplicity of medieval art. Brown's early work was influenced by the realism of the French painter Gustave Courbet, and he went on to create highly detailed paintings with historical or literary themes. Among his notable works are "The Last of England" and "Work," which portray the lives of ordinary people. Brown also collaborated with other Pre-Raphaelite artists on murals for the Manchester Town Hall. Despite his contributions to the movement, Brown's work was often overshadowed by that of his contemporaries, such as Dante Gabriel Rossetti and William Morris.
