George Stubbs

George Stubbs (1724-1806) was an English painter and anatomist who is best known for his realistic and anatomically accurate depictions of animals, particularly horses. Stubbs was self-taught, and his works were characterized by their meticulous attention to detail and the scientific accuracy of his subjects. He was fascinated by the natural world and spent much of his career studying and dissecting animals to better understand their anatomy and movement. Stubbs' works were highly regarded in his lifetime and were particularly popular among the English aristocracy, who prized his paintings of their prized horses and hunting dogs. Today, Stubbs' works are celebrated for their precision and realism, and his influence can be seen in the work of later animal painters such as Edwin Landseer and Rosa Bonheur.
