Georges de La Tour

Georges de La Tour was a French Baroque painter known for his captivating use of light and shadow. Born in Vic-sur-Seille, Lorraine in 1593, he trained under a painter of religious works before studying in Paris and Rome. After returning to Lorraine, he gained recognition for his highly detailed, naturalistic paintings featuring religious and genre scenes, often depicted in dimly lit settings with a single, intense light source. La Tour's work was highly sought after by private patrons and the court of Louis XIII. However, his popularity declined after his death in 1652, and his work was largely forgotten until the 20th century when it was rediscovered and celebrated for its striking realism and atmospheric effects. Today, his paintings are highly prized and can be found in major museums and collections around the world.
