Collection: Helene Schjerfbeck

Helene Schjerfbeck was a Finnish painter known for her self-portraits and landscapes. She was born in Helsinki in 1862 and began painting at a young age. In 1880, she enrolled at the Finnish Art Society's drawing school, and later studied in Paris and St. Ives, England. Schjerfbeck’s work evolved throughout her career, from realism to modernism, and she often experimented with different techniques and styles. Her paintings are characterized by their subtle colors and delicate brushstrokes, which give her portraits a sense of intimacy and introspection. Although she remained relatively unknown outside of Finland during her lifetime, Schjerfbeck's work has since gained international recognition. She is now considered one of Finland’s most important artists, and her paintings can be found in major museums around the world. Schjerfbeck died in Helsinki in 1946.
