Collection: James Tissot

James Tissot (1836-1902) was a French painter known for his depictions of contemporary society, particularly the fashionable women of Parisian high society. Born in Nantes, Tissot studied art in Paris and exhibited at the Salon from 1859. His early works were influenced by the Pre-Raphaelites, and he later developed his own style characterized by detailed realism and attention to detail. In the 1860s, Tissot became fascinated with the lifestyle of the upper classes and began depicting their daily lives in his paintings. He gained popularity in both France and England, where he spent much of his later career. Tissot's work fell out of favor after his death but was rediscovered in the 1960s and has since been the subject of several major retrospectives. Today, he is considered a master of Belle Époque painting and an important chronicler of late 19th-century Parisian society.
