Collection: Aleksander Gierymski

Aleksander Gierymski was a Polish painter and a representative of the Realism and Impressionism movements. He was born in Warsaw in 1850 and studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. His early works were inspired by the Realism movement, but he later turned to Impressionism and Post-Impressionism, and his paintings featured lively brushstrokes and vibrant colors.Gierymski is best known for his urban landscapes, depicting the streets and alleys of Warsaw and other European cities. He also created portraits, still lifes, and genre scenes. Gierymski was a member of the Munich Secession and his works were exhibited in many European cities.Gierymski's career was cut short by his untimely death at the age of 29 in Rome, where he had gone to study the works of Italian masters. Despite his short career, he is considered one of the most important Polish painters of the late 19th century.
