Collection: Alexander Ivanov

Alexander Ivanov (1806-1858) was a Russian painter of historical and biblical subjects. He received his education at the Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg and later studied in Italy. In Rome, Ivanov was exposed to the works of the Renaissance masters, which had a profound impact on his style and subject matter. His most famous work is the massive canvas, The Appearance of Christ Before the People, which took him 20 years to complete. The painting depicts a dramatic moment from the New Testament, where John the Baptist introduces Jesus to a crowd of people on the banks of the Jordan River. Despite the long and difficult process of creating the work, it was critically acclaimed and became one of the most important works of Russian art. Unfortunately, Ivanov died before the painting was completed and was unable to witness its success.
