Collection: Alonzo Cano

Alonzo Cano (1601-1667) was a Spanish painter, sculptor, and architect of the Baroque era. Born in Granada, he studied under his father, Miguel Cano, before moving to Madrid in 1626, where he worked for the royal court. Cano's early work was influenced by the style of the Italian painter Caravaggio, but he later developed a more personal style characterized by dramatic lighting and intense emotion. In addition to his painting, Cano was a skilled sculptor, and his work can be seen in many churches throughout Spain. He was also an accomplished architect, designing several buildings in Granada, including the church of San Juan de Dios. Cano's work had a profound influence on the art of Spain in the Baroque period and beyond.
