Collection: Amadeo de Souza Cardoso

Amadeo de Souza Cardoso (1887-1918) was a Portuguese artist who was a key figure in the modernist movement. Born in Amarante, Portugal, he studied art in Lisbon and then moved to Paris in 1906, where he immersed himself in the avant-garde art scene. He was particularly influenced by the work of the Fauvists and the Cubists. In Paris, Souza Cardoso exhibited his work alongside other modernist artists, including Picasso and Braque. His paintings were marked by their bold use of color and their fractured, geometric forms. He also experimented with other media, including sculpture and printmaking. Tragically, Souza Cardoso's promising career was cut short when he died at the age of 30 during the 1918 flu pandemic. Despite his short life, he made a significant contribution to the development of modern art in Portugal and beyond.
