Collection: Artemisia Gentileschi

Artemisia Gentileschi (1593-1653) was an Italian Baroque painter and one of the most celebrated female artists of her time. She was the daughter of painter Orazio Gentileschi, from whom she learned her craft, and she became known for her powerful and dramatic depictions of Biblical and mythological scenes. Gentileschi faced significant obstacles as a woman in the male-dominated art world, but her skill and talent earned her commissions from prominent patrons throughout Europe. She gained international recognition for her painting Judith Slaying Holofernes, which depicts the Biblical story of Judith beheading the Assyrian general Holofernes. Her work often focused on strong female figures and themes of female empowerment, possibly reflecting her own experiences as a woman in a male-dominated field. Despite facing discrimination and personal struggles throughout her career, Gentileschi's legacy continues to inspire and influence artists today.
