Collection: August Macke

August Macke (1887-1914) was a German painter and one of the leading members of the Expressionist movement. Born in Meschede, Germany, he studied at the Düsseldorf Academy of Fine Arts before moving to Berlin in 1907, where he was exposed to the works of the French Fauvists and Post-Impressionists.Macke's paintings are characterized by bright colors and simplified forms, often depicting scenes from everyday life. He was particularly interested in the relationship between color and emotion, and his work was a major influence on the development of German Expressionism.Tragically, Macke's career was cut short when he was killed in action during World War I at the age of 27. Despite his short life, Macke's work remains an important contribution to the development of modern art.
