Carl Bloch (1834-1890) was a Danish painter who specialized in religious and historical scenes. He received his artistic training at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and later studied under the renowned artist, Jean-Léon Gérôme, in Paris. Bloch's paintings often depicted biblical stories and figures, with a particular emphasis on the life of Christ. His works were notable for their use of light and shadow, as well as the emotional depth and realism of the figures. Bloch was also skilled in portraiture and genre painting, which often depicted everyday scenes of Danish life. He received numerous accolades during his lifetime and his works were exhibited throughout Europe. Today, his paintings can be found in museums and galleries around the world, and he is considered one of Denmark's most significant artists of the 19th century.
