Edward John Poynter (1836-1919) was a British painter and draughtsman who is best known for his highly finished and academically precise historical and classical scenes. He studied at the Royal Academy Schools in London and won many prizes and awards, including a scholarship to study in Rome.Poynter served as the director of the National Gallery in London from 1894 until his death, and was elected as the President of the Royal Academy in 1896. He was knighted in 1906.Some of Poynter's most famous works include "The Visit of the Queen of Sheba to King Solomon," "Atalanta's Race," and "Israel in Egypt." His paintings often featured highly polished surfaces, dramatic lighting, and carefully researched historical or mythological themes. Poynter was one of the most prominent and influential artists of his time, and his work had a major impact on the development of academic painting in Britain.
