Gheorghe Tattarescu (1818-1894) was a prominent Romanian painter and one of the pioneers of modern art in Romania. He studied painting in Paris, where he was influenced by the works of Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres and Eugène Delacroix. He returned to Romania in 1856 and became a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bucharest, where he taught a generation of Romanian artists.Tattarescu was renowned for his skill in portraiture and his historical paintings, many of which depicted important events in Romanian history.
