Collection: Giotto

Giotto di Bondone (1267-1337) was an Italian painter and architect who is considered one of the most important artists of the Early Renaissance period. Born in Tuscany, he trained under Cimabue and was known for his ability to capture emotion and human expression in his paintings, which was a departure from the stylized, abstract approach of earlier Byzantine art.Giotto's most famous works include his frescoes in the Scrovegni Chapel in Padua, which depict scenes from the life of Christ and the Virgin Mary. These frescoes are notable for their naturalism, use of perspective, and vivid depictions of human emotions. Giotto also painted a number of altarpieces and panel paintings, including the famous Ognissanti Madonna. In addition to his work as a painter, Giotto was also a skilled architect, and he designed several buildings in Florence and elsewhere in Italy. His legacy as an artist and innovator in the Early Renaissance continues to influence artists today.
