Collection: Giovanni Paolo Panini

Giovanni Paolo Panini (1691-1765) was an Italian painter and architect who is best known for his vedute, or views of Rome. Born in Piacenza, Italy, he trained in Bologna under the set designer Francesco Galli Bibiena before moving to Rome, where he quickly established himself as a leading artist of the time. Panini's work focused on capturing the grandeur and beauty of Rome's historic architecture, as well as the city's contemporary life, creating highly detailed and often dramatic scenes. His paintings were popular with wealthy patrons, and he received many important commissions, including from the Vatican and the French court. Panini also worked as an architect, designing interiors and theatrical sets. Today, his works can be found in museums around the world, including the Louvre in Paris and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
