Collection: Gustave Moreau

Gustave Moreau (1826-1898) was a French Symbolist painter who is known for his fantastical and imaginative works. He studied under the renowned neoclassical artist Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres and later became a professor at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris.Moreau's work was heavily influenced by his interest in mythology and the occult, and he often created intricate and detailed scenes of fantastical creatures and gods. He was also inspired by the Romantic movement and the works of artists like Eugène Delacroix.Despite being relatively unknown during his lifetime, Moreau's work gained recognition after his death and he became an influential figure for the Symbolist movement in art. His home and studio, now known as the Musée Gustave Moreau, has been preserved as a museum in Paris and contains many of his works, as well as his personal collections of art and objects.
