Collection: Hans Makart

Hans Makart was an Austrian painter and designer of the 19th century. He was born in Salzburg in 1840 and began his artistic training at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. Makart was a prominent member of the Viennese art scene and was particularly known for his large-scale historical paintings, which often featured dramatic, theatrical compositions and vibrant colors.Makart's work was highly successful during his lifetime and he was commissioned to create numerous murals and decorative schemes for public buildings and private residences throughout Austria and Germany. He was also a renowned costume and set designer for the Vienna Court Opera.Despite his commercial success, Makart's work fell out of favor in the early 20th century and he is now often viewed as a representative of the excesses of the late 19th-century art world. However, his bold and colorful style continues to be admired for its theatricality and drama. Makart died in Vienna in 1884 at the age of 44.
