Henri Fantin-Latour (1836-1904) was a French painter and lithographer known for his still lifes, portraits, and imaginative compositions. He was born in Grenoble, France, and moved to Paris in 1850 to study art.Fantin-Latour's early works were heavily influenced by the Old Masters, especially Rembrandt and Velázquez. In the 1860s, he became involved with the group of artists who would later form the Impressionist movement, but he never fully adopted their style. Instead, he continued to paint in a highly detailed and realistic manner.His still lifes, which often featured flowers, fruits, and other objects arranged in a decorative manner, are among his most famous works. He also painted portraits of his contemporaries, including artists, musicians, and writers. In addition to painting, he was a skilled lithographer, producing numerous prints throughout his career.Fantin-Latour's work was highly regarded in his lifetime, and he exhibited regularly at the Salon and other venues. Today, his paintings and lithographs can be found in major museums around the world, including the Musée d'Orsay in Paris and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
