Collection: Hilma af Klint

Hilma af Klint (1862-1944) was a Swedish artist known for her abstract paintings that predated the work of many other well-known abstract artists of the 20th century. Despite her innovative approach, her work was largely unrecognized during her lifetime, and she worked largely in obscurity.Af Klint was trained in traditional techniques of painting and drawing, and worked in a style influenced by Symbolism, Theosophy, and spiritualism. Later in her life, she began to experiment with more abstract forms, creating large-scale paintings that incorporated geometric shapes, vibrant colors, and complex symbolism. She believed that her art was a means of communicating with the spiritual world and that her work had a purpose beyond its aesthetic value. It wasn't until the 1980s that her work began to receive more recognition, and today she is considered a pioneer of abstract art.
