Honoré Daumier (1808-1879) was a French artist and printmaker best known for his caricatures and satirical social commentary. Born in Marseille, Daumier moved to Paris at a young age and became interested in art. He began his career as a lithographer, creating illustrations for various newspapers and magazines. His work often criticized the social and political climate of his time, and he became well-known for his caricatures of politicians, lawyers, and other prominent figures.Daumier's work was often controversial and resulted in legal trouble for him. In 1832, he was imprisoned for six months for his portrayal of King Louis-Philippe as Gargantua. Despite this, he continued to create art and eventually turned to painting in his later years. Today, Daumier is regarded as a major figure in the development of modern art, and his work continues to be studied and admired for its incisive commentary on society and its engaging style.
