Hugo Simberg (1873-1917) was a Finnish symbolist painter and graphic artist. He is best known for his dark and mystical works, which often depict death and the afterlife. Born in Hamina, Finland, Simberg studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Helsinki before traveling to Paris to study with some of the leading symbolist artists of the time.Simberg's most famous painting is "The Wounded Angel," which depicts a wounded angel being cared for by two young boys in a desolate landscape.
