Collection: Jack Tworkov

Jack Tworkov (1900-1982) was an American abstract expressionist painter. Born in Poland, Tworkov immigrated to the United States in 1913 and studied at Columbia University before joining the Works Progress Administration during the Great Depression. He was one of the founders of The Club, a group of artists who would gather to discuss art and ideas, and was heavily influenced by the works of Willem de Kooning and Arshile Gorky.Tworkov's early works were figurative, but he eventually transitioned to abstract expressionism, creating large, gestural paintings with vibrant colors and dynamic brushstrokes. He taught at various institutions, including the Pratt Institute and Yale University, and was the chairman of the art department at Yale from 1963 until 1969. His work can be found in numerous public and private collections, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
