Collection: Jan Toorop

Jan Toorop (1858-1928) was a Dutch painter and graphic artist who played a significant role in the development of Dutch Art Nouveau. Born in Java, Indonesia, Toorop moved to the Netherlands as a child and studied art in Amsterdam and Brussels. He was influenced by the works of the Symbolists and Art Nouveau artists, and his art often featured sinuous lines and flowing curves. Toorop's most famous works include his portraits, landscapes, and religious themes, as well as his designs for posters and book covers. He also worked in a range of media, including oil painting, watercolor, and lithography. Throughout his career, Toorop experimented with various styles, but his art always remained deeply spiritual and contemplative. Today, his works are housed in many major museums around the world.
