Collection: Jan van Eyck

Jan van Eyck (c. 1390-1441) was a Flemish painter and a pioneer of the Early Netherlandish painting school. He is best known for his innovative techniques in oil painting, particularly his use of glazes and detailed realism in his portraits and religious scenes. Van Eyck was employed by various rulers and nobles throughout his career, including Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, and his brother, John, Bishop of Liège. He created many important altarpieces, including the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb for the Ghent Altarpiece. Van Eyck's work influenced many artists, including the Italian Renaissance painters, and he is regarded as one of the most significant artists of the Northern Renaissance. Despite his fame and influence, little is known about his personal life or early career.
