Jusepe de Ribera, also known as Lo Spagnoletto, was a Spanish painter who lived and worked in Italy. Born in Játiva, Spain in 1591, Ribera was trained as a painter in Valencia before moving to Italy in 1611. He settled in Naples, where he established himself as a leading figure of the local art scene.Ribera's style was heavily influenced by Caravaggio and the Baroque movement, characterized by dramatic lighting and strong contrasts of light and shadow. His paintings often featured religious themes, as well as depictions of ordinary people in everyday life.Ribera's reputation as a painter grew throughout his career, and he received numerous commissions from churches and wealthy patrons. He died in Naples in 1652, leaving behind a significant body of work that continues to be celebrated for its realism, emotional intensity, and technical skill.
