Collection: Pierre Bonnard

Pierre Bonnard (1867-1947) was a French painter and printmaker, associated with the Nabis group, who sought to create art that embodied the emotions and experiences of everyday life. Born in Fontenay-aux-Roses, Bonnard initially studied law before deciding to pursue art. He was strongly influenced by the works of Paul Gauguin and Japanese prints, which can be seen in his use of flattened spaces and decorative patterns. Bonnard's paintings are characterized by their bright colors, flattened forms, and unusual perspectives. He often depicted domestic scenes and landscapes, as well as his wife Marthe, whom he painted in a variety of poses and settings. Later in life, Bonnard moved away from Nabi-style and became more interested in representing the fleeting moments of everyday life, using light and color to create an atmosphere of intimacy and emotion.
