Collection: Theodore Gericault

Théodore Géricault (1791-1824) was a French Romantic painter who is best known for his dramatic and emotionally charged works that dealt with contemporary issues of his time. Géricault was particularly interested in the human form and its relationship to power, politics, and society. His most famous work, "The Raft of the Medusa," is a monumental painting that depicts the aftermath of a shipwreck, with a group of desperate survivors clinging to a makeshift raft. The painting caused a sensation when it was first exhibited in 1819 and established Géricault as a major figure in the Romantic movement. Géricault's work had a profound influence on later artists such as Eugène Delacroix, and he is now considered one of the most important painters of his era. Unfortunately, he died at the young age of 32 due to a riding accident.
